General

PLUNJ is a Nordic style bathhouse. Locations are open throughout Utah and Idaho, with more to come all across the United States. See plunj.co.

Our Salt Lake city bathhouse strives to straddle the line between utility and luxury. You will find that our space, while very well-appointed, is simple in its method as well as in its practice.

Patrons have access to a locker room (male / female), as well as a studio area consisting of a large sauna, cold plunge pool, bucket shower, lounge chairs, and beverage station. You’re free to experience each on your own timing and rotation during a 60-minute session. Contrast Therapy – a type of treatment done through deliberate and safe exposure to extreme temperatures, such as switching back and forth between a sauna and a cold plunge. Salt Lake’s bathhouse has two studios, each consisting of a dry (electric) sauna, cold plunge pool, bucket shower, lounge chairs, and a beverage / refreshment station.

While “Hosts” support maintaining a chill and safe environment, you’re free to experience the space at your own will. There is not guided process. However, our hosts are happy to answer questions and support.

Most guests follow a rotation: start in the sauna for 10-15 minutes, rinse off in a warm bucket shower, spend 30 seconds to 3 minutes in the cold pool, and rest for a few minutes before repeating that process one or two more times.

There are also men’s & women’s locker rooms, each with 2 showers, 2 changing areas, and a toilet room. All are stocked with soap / shampoo and personal care items. Lockers are also for storing any personal items / clothing.

Remember to bring your own swimwear!

Contrast therapy is a type of treatment done through deliberate and safe exposure to extreme temperatures, such as switching back and forth between a sauna and a cold plunge. It provides many physical and mental health benefits.

Traditionally, bathhouses have been a center of the community. Our hope for PLUNJ is just that, a place to gather.

PLUNJ is meant to be a social place. However, we encourage guests to please be mindful of others’ experiences, use indoor voices when talking, and keep conversations appropriate. Any and all unwanted advances will be dealt with immediately.

Parking is easy and free with us! Despite being located in an urban environment, we have ample parking available. We created this comprehensive guide with all the options, as well as our parking map.

Covered Parking

    • Enter on the NW or SE side of the Bowers Residences.

    • Despite signage, paid parking is not currently enforced.

    • Parking is most readily available on the 2nd floor. Proceed to the East stairwell / elevator. You know you’re on the East side because it’ll have an elevator. Other side does not.

    • Whatever level you park on, descend to the ground level, where you’ll be greeted by an orange bird mural.

    • Exit out the garage, turning left (North) you’ll see a hanging “PLUNJ” sign.

    • Head that way, around to the North side of the building, where you’ll see our main entrance.

    • You cannot exit the parking garage through the North lobbies, they are key card access controlled for residents only.

Street Parking

  • Utopia Ave

    • North side only

  • Richards St

    • East and West sides

Paved / Dirt Lot South Parking

Traditionally, bathhouses are clothing optional. However, at PLUNJ clothing is MANDATORY. Most guests wear swimwear or something they feel comfortable getting wet in. All swimwear should be appropriate for a public communal space.

PLUNJ is intended to be a tech-free space, but we don’t explicitly ban cell phones in our space. We’ve found leaving your device in your locker provides the best experience.

If you do choose to bring your phone into the space, refrain from any actions that would distract or disrupt others; including:

– Playing music – Watching videos – Talking on the phone

Before taking any photography / video of yourself, but especially if it includes others, request permission from each person in the group. Any questions or concerns, please contact your host.

Yes, the local health department regulates usage by minors. No children under the age of 14 years are permitted at any time–including in the lounge area. Minors 14 – 17 must to be accompanied by an adult. A parent / guardian must complete a consent waiver on their behalf.

The Salt Lake County health department regularly inspects our pools to ensure we’re exceeding water quality standards. Due to a 2024 Utah law, many cold plunge facilities have no sanitization requirements or oversight, whereas our pool are verifiably clean.

We engage three layers of premium sanitization: (1) Filter, (2) Ozone, (3) UV Light in addition to required chemical balancing (Chlorine, Muriatic Acid). Your average hot hub, significantly more prone to bacteria growth, turns over the water through a basic filter every 30 minutes. Our pools cycle through the entire water in less than 15 minutes. All while using just minimal drops of chemicals to ensure that fresh water, spring-like feel. If you smell “Chlorine”, it’s not being done right.

So, “How clean?”. Some of the cleanest you fill find on the market!

All that said… we also provide a 30 min reset in-between usage, providing two additional cycles for the water to reset, as well as skimming the pool surface for any visible contaminants that otherwise may be present.

Experience the difference for yourself!

We specialize in the Nordic tradition. Our practice and studio is simple… sauna and cold pools are what we do. Nothing more, nothing less. It’s our specialty, and it shows. In over 550 Google Reviews, the consensus is five stars. Read what real people are saying.

Yes, we’re actively involved in many community causes and welcome supporting however we can. Message us at saltlakecity@plunj.co with your request and info.

This is just helping folks maximize their experience with us. We try to offer the little things that make your experience more than just a transaction get cold, get hot but one that leaves you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated in every way.

Taking a queue from In-N-Out (our neighbor), we developed our own secret menu that we wish wasn’t so secret.

The number one principle or practice to follow is listen to your body!

If you begin to shiver in the water, your heart rate is increasing and your breathing will be affected. This is your body telling you it’s time to get out and get warm. Dry off with a towel and allow your body to warm up on its own.

Research suggests that you only need to be immersed to the neck in cold water for 30-90 seconds to reap the benefits of brown fat activation, mood-boosting hormones, and improved immune response. In fact, it’s much more effective to do shorter plunges more regularly than it is to do one long plunge.

The Salt Lake County health department requires we maintain our pools at 50° and have a hypothermia action plan. When practiced conservatively, there is little risk for hypothermia. However, review the following for signs and actions to take.

Step 0: Notify a Host Immediately

– If concerned you, or someone in your party, may be experience hypothermia, notify your host immediately.

Step 1: Recognize Symptoms and Ensure Safety

– Shivering, dizziness, confusion, slurred speech, and slow pulse.

– Move to the rest (lounge) area, not the sauna.

Step 2: Provide Warmth and Comfort

– Remove wet clothing and replace with dry, warm layers.

– Use dry blankets and offer a warm non-caffinated beverage

– Hosts will check on patrons every 5 minutes to monitor

their condition.

Step 3: Monitor and Seek Medical Help

– Keep a close watch on condition.

– Call 911 for severe symptoms or if anyone becomes unresponsive.

The number one principle or practice to follow is listen to your body!

Some of the body’s signs of overheating are tingling in the fingers, ears, and skin, and/or hyperventilating.

Research suggests that 10-15 minutes at a time in the sauna is optimal, and anything over 19 minutes per session may be too much.

Although we can become more habituated and acclimatized to the heat over time, there is a threshold before too much stress is placed on our cardiovascular system or our proteins begin to sustain damage.

PLUNJ is not a medical facility, please consult with your health care professional about any specific considerations  about hot / cold exposure.

If you have cardiovascular disease, cardiac arrhythmia, excessively high or low blood pressure, fever, cancer, skin disorders, blood clots, varicose veins, or respiratory infections, the sauna may be more harmful than helpful for you.

If you have untreated myocardial hypertrophy, coronary artery disease and/or chest pain, untreated high blood pressure, other cardiovascular health problems or cardiac arrhythmia, it may be best to avoid cold water.

Please consult your doctor if you’re not sure whether you should use the sauna or cold plunges.

If you are pregnant, please consult your doctor before using the sauna and cold plunges.

We are not a medical facility, please consult with your health care professional about any specific considerations about cold / heat exposure (contrast therapy).

Dr. Susanna Søberg is a scientist, author, and educator specializing in metabolism, cold & heat exposure, and longevity.

Dr. Søberg emphatically rejects the idea that women should avoid cold water simply because of hormones or “fragility.” Saying specifically, “Women are not too sensitive for cold plunging. What women need is nuanced guidance on how to use cold therapy effectively and safely.”

She supports understanding the physiology and context of how cold affects the nervous system.

All people should first and foremost be guided by what’s best for their body. There is no prescribed time / practice at PLUNJ. Use moderation.

Women in particular find benefits in paying attention to their cycle phase, current stress, and recovery status.

We are not a medical facility, please consult with your health care professional about any specific considerations about cold / heat exposure (contrast therapy).

There’s something to be said about the immersiveness of the plunge, versus the shower. While you may be able to capture some of the same benefits, people report the experience is MUCH better taking a plunge.

The shower pelts your otherwise warm body, shoulders, back with slices of streaming cold. The plunge forces your entire body to confront the cold situation, but together.

30 seconds in a cold shower can feel like an eternity, while many people report that after about 30 seconds in a cold pool, they’re body has acclimated. While still “cold” it’s not a sheering painful cold like what the shower produces.

Jokingly people might say, “Well that’s because you’re hypothermic by that point!” Rare that are the temperature, and level of exposure, that would be the case in a cold pool. Refer to How cold are your pools for more info…

Booking

While our website is mobile responsive, the app (Apple / Google) is much easier to schedule, reschedule, cancel, buy and manage discount passes.

Within just a couple of taps you can see upcoming sessions and book.

It also displays, more transparently, how many participants are in each upcoming session.

We look forward to welcoming you! Review our First Time page. Our hosts are trained to help make the most of your visit. Plan to arrive 10-15 minutes early for parking, and a short orientation from our host.

If you are running late for your assigned time slot, don’t stress. Give us a heads up with a text message / app chat.

Even 55 or 50 minutes is often plenty of time for you to enjoy the session. While we typically begin turning over (cleaning) the space at 60 minutes. However, always check with our host for flexibility.

Facilities

Temperatures of cold plunges are regulated by the local health department. In Salt Lake, our cold plunges must be 50°+. You can expect the temperature to be somewhere between 48 – 52° when you visit.

The sauna is set between 190-210°F.

We have a dedicated locker room for males, and another for females. Each has a private toilet room (locked door) that can also be using for changing. There’s also multiple two showers + changing areas in each locker room with a privacy curtain. We do provide a host of complimentary personal toiletries including pads, tampons, q-tips, hair ties, lotion, shampoo, 3-in-1 soap, etc. Wherever you’re coming from, or going, you’ll be refreshed and ready to go!

– Access to gender-specific locker rooms + changing areas as well as a studio that includes:

  • A communal 195º dry sauna for up to 8 people (public sessions), or as many as 20 for private group sessions.
  • A communal 50º cold pool for up to 6 people to simultaneously plunge
  • A Scandinavian bucket shower (rinse in-between sauna / plunge) with warm water
  • Classic Adirondack lounge chairs
  • Complimentary filtered water and tea

Definitively the cleanest in the public space.

Each 60-minute session you join is followed by a 30-minute reset. During that time a host sanitizes the benches, mops the floor, cleans the sauna window glass / handle, and overall ensures whether you’re the first guest, or the last guest of the day, you feel like it’s absolutely fresh and clean.

HOT. COLD. REST. REPEAT.

These rituals are time-tested and are as simple as they are effective. That is why here at PLUNJ, staying true to the Nordic tradition. We are sure that it will leave you feeling refreshed and ready to PLUNJ through whatever life might have in store for you next.
